Paintings Done & Art Show

16" x 20"

Well, I have been working my tail off getting ready for the show Friday, trying to finish some paintings that have been half-way started - I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel! Still working on one more for the show, then I will be done with the painting part. Still have to frame, brochures, card, etc.

Recently, I developed an aversion to painting on the texture of canvas, so I decided after my next commission, to only paint on wood panel or masonite. It difficult to get detail, time consuming - takes more paint, feels awkward, etc. Maybe large paintings will still be on canvas - not sure yet.

Also, I have switched to distilled turpentine from mineral spirits - not sure why I didn't do it sooner. It's a much better experience and I don't feel drugged after painting all day. Maybe less headaches?

Hope to see you Friday night!

Art Show!!

It's been a busy year already!

I'm having an Art Show Feb 26th at the new Wrightsville Bean & Company Cafe 6 - 9pm. I'll be showing about 5 new paintings, some Random Facebook Pet Paintings, "Peace" and a large painting that has never been shown anywhere that I consider to be one of my best.

I hope that you can come... see some art, have a coffee or some hot chocolate, listen to some music, sit awhile (still working on the music part).

There will be four other studios open that night to tour in the area.

I was at an art show the other night and someone had mentioned making a pact to do some kind of art every day in February - kind of like the "daily painting" idea, but with other forms of art. There was a sculptor, jewelry designer, me and another painter and I thought it would be fun to do this with a group of artists. So I put together a Facebook group called Wilmington One-A-Days for February. Since last I checked there are 92 members with new posts everyday. I'm so impressed with the turn out!

Anyone can join - they don't have to be from Wilmington. It's open to anyone who wants to commit to doing something creative everyday. Here is the info I put on the group...
This site is for anyone who wants to create and post a new piece of art everyday for the month of February. Any art counts... painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, cooking, knitting, hair cutting, whatever. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece - this is just an exercise of inspiration. When you post please indicate the day, name & medium. Posting starts Feb 1st.

Also I'm going to be in an art show with some other artists - here is the info -

"Peace" in progress

16" x 19"
oil on canvas panel

I started this yesterday and at this point it is without color, painted only in burnt umber, later I'm going to layer in the color. I've been reading a book called Alla Prima: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Direct Painting by Al Gury and it talks about this process. I used to only paint in black and white then add some color. So I thought I would try this process and so far I'm really liking the results - I'm not even sure I want color.

I'm hoping to use this painting as a submission in a portrait competition. For some reason this painting reminds me of the beginning of a poem by Sara Teasdale. Here is the whole poem:

Peace flows into me
As the tide to the pool by the shore;
It is mine forevermore,
It ebbs not back like the sea.

I am the pool of blue
That worships the vivid sky;
My hopes were heaven-high,
They are all fulfilled in you.

I am the pool of gold
When sunset burns and dies —
You are my deepening skies,
Give me your stars to hold.
