Turns out the painting I posted last of the dog swimming is the #1 Flat Coated Retriever in the world for dock diving and in the top 5 for dock diving in the country! Pretty impressive!

"Peace" in progress

16" x 19"
oil on canvas panel

I started this yesterday and at this point it is without color, painted only in burnt umber, later I'm going to layer in the color. I've been reading a book called Alla Prima: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Direct Painting by Al Gury and it talks about this process. I used to only paint in black and white then add some color. So I thought I would try this process and so far I'm really liking the results - I'm not even sure I want color.

I'm hoping to use this painting as a submission in a portrait competition. For some reason this painting reminds me of the beginning of a poem by Sara Teasdale. Here is the whole poem:

Peace flows into me
As the tide to the pool by the shore;
It is mine forevermore,
It ebbs not back like the sea.

I am the pool of blue
That worships the vivid sky;
My hopes were heaven-high,
They are all fulfilled in you.

I am the pool of gold
When sunset burns and dies —
You are my deepening skies,
Give me your stars to hold.

8" x 8"

SOLD

I'm starting a new daily painting project called R.F.P.P. Random Facebook Pet Painting. Which is just what it sounds like - using photos from my friends list for random pet paintings. So if your not on my friends list and you want a painting of your pet, you may want to "friend me" and put up a decent photo of your pet (cat or dog). You can use the painting in your profile picture and if you want to purchase it - they will sell for $75.

Here is an update on the "Queen Naomi" painting.
It's about 75% done - time to start the other commission!

This is a commission is a of a Red Bone Hound Dog - The nose looks a little crooked to me and in the photo it's crooked as well. I'm going to ask the client if this is accurate and if not I will need to change it.

I've noticed sometimes when you take photos of dogs, if your hold food, they will sniff and when a dog sniffs, their noses move back and forth. The photo given by the client my have caught him or her in "mid-sniff" and that is why the nose looks crooked and considering the sniffer on these dogs is what they were (guessing here) breed for, I'm guessing this is the case or maybe he or she just has a crooked nose. I probably should have asked before finishing the paint, but it's not that big of a change.

2010 Uncorked

8" x 6"
oil on panel

This is my first painting of 2010. I hope everyone had a safe and peaceful new year celebration. Mine was very quiet... crablegs, steak, baked potato, movie and Welches sparkling for us. Guy surprised me with an engagement ring at 12:12. A very nice way to start the new year.

I wanted to take a break for a few days... actually I think it's been a week and although I haven't been painting the small paintings, I have been whittling away at the large commission of "Queen Naomi" and it's coming along really nice. I'm so excited about this painting! I will send photos later this week.
