The End of Winter

"The End of Winter"
12 x 12"
mixed media
view in my shop

This is my first painting of 2018.
It has been a tough winter and I am looking forward to some warm weather. The sound of Grackles always remind me of summer - cackling away in the trees - always busy doing something.

On another note, Chumley is doing much better, recovering to 100% - thank you to everyone who took part of the Studio Sale!

I painted this image a few years ago and I've alway wanted to paint it big.
Now, it's almost life-size!

Baxter

"Baxter"
10" x 8"
oil on canvas

For the past week I have been struggling with one of the nastiest colds I have ever experienced. With the belief that I could control this and "get better faster so I can get on with my life" I have tried everything homeopathic to OTC from thera-flu to turmeric steams, Nyquil to epsom baths with mega doses of vitamin C, to no avail. I have come to the conclusion I just have to let it run it's course and take the break when it's given.
I surrendered.

Today is the first day I could concentrate without an uncontrollable cough, drippy nose, dizziness, migraine, etc. I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.

So, I decided to paint Baxter. Baxter is kind of a new addition to our family. He is a super unique loving pup with eyesight issues. When he first got here, he ran into furniture a lot and I considered putting pool noodles on the coffee table, but now that he knows the lay of the land, he fits in quite perfectly.

I found out that he is a mixed breed called a Meagle (mix of Min-Pin and Beagle).

PAINT MY DOG! #21

Lexi
8" x 10"
oil on canvas

Lexi's story…
"Here is Lexi, returning from a day over on Masonboro Island.  This once stray/ lost puppy was found this past Valentine's Day and put in foster care.  She joined our family this past May and has warmed our hearts.  She is a Terrier Mix and sometimes a Terror, she likes to thieve anything she can get her hands on.  I think that might stem from being lost and hungry and having to hunt for food.  She loves car and boat rides, feeling the wind in her hair.  She is playful and loving.  She already had her first modeling debut in Salt magazine. She was the Model in the ad  for Uptown Market.  However she came to us, we can't imagine our family without her.  She is our Sexy Lexi!  Who apparently looks a lot like Benji!"

PAINT MY DOG! Series #20

"Ethel"
8" x 10"
oil on canvas
sold

"Ethel, my sweet girl and her story... Ethel was adopted into our home from a local shelter outside of Memphis, TN. She was a mere 8 weeks old when she came home with me and her canine sister, Lucy. Yes, Lucy & Ethel! To say the least, that pair emulated their namesakes. Whatever shenanigans Lucy would get started, Ethel was most assuredly right alongside! For seven years these two were the best of friends, and the best companions for me.

Ethel, even at nine years old, possess a childlike curiosity for the world around her. In her younger days that inquisitiveness found her in the vet's office several times. She learned the lesson after the fourth spider bite to her face. Between vertigo and vertebrae issues, I have watched this precious dog overcome each one with nary a whine or whimper.

Don't let her size fool you! Ethel may be small but inside that little body is a huge heart. She glances at you with pure compassion, which sometimes it feels greater than that I receive from humans. She has a sense of humor too! She is witty without words, it's as if she has a sense of discernment and knows when I need a laugh.

In making two moves within the last year (Memphis to DC and DC to Chicago) she has been quite the trooper. Her ability to seamlessly acclimate to each new environment, her constant curiosity, and willingness to tag along wherever I go... She makes my life full beyond words!!"

Ivan the Terrier

Ivan the Terrier
8" x 10"
oil on canvas
framed in and antique style frame

I have wanted to paint Chumley as Napoleon ever since we found him... I guess since he's so small, but has such a large presence to me.

Unfortunately for commissions and my 25 dogs list, I've been struggling with painting ever since I got back from my vacation… painters block….  I wanted to do something not serious and fun and this is the painting that came out.

Rocket Dog

48" x 24"
oil on canvas

Sometimes I do a painting and just know something is off. So I hang it up and look at it for awhile, sometimes even months and then it hits me what I need to do and it will eat at me until I do it. So, I'll put it back on the easel, I'll make the changes with a little extras and the familiar alarm will go off that tells me "it's done".

I did this a few months ago and never listed it because I knew deep down, even though I wanted it to be done, it wasn't.

Well, now it is.

The Daily Dog - Eighteen

8" x 10"
oil on canvas

This is Hannah.
I saw this photo of her of her awhile back on a facebook friend's page...
I thought it was one of the funniest photos I had seen, but I also connected to it because sometimes I feel like this with life. That I'm being pulled along with no choices, but I do have choices and some of them are tough. I am at a point in my life where I have to make some tough choices in order to take care of myself.

One of my most favorite quotes from my really smart sister is "don't just do something, sit there".... what it means to me is sometimes you can't control life, you need to sit with it awhile and the answers will become apparent.

When I saw the photo of Hannah on the blue blanket, I just had to paint it. I have never met her, but she seems like a really cool dog.
